Gemeinsam mit nigerianischen Partnern wurde die urspr\u00fcnglich geplante Pr\u00e4sentation komplett \u00fcberarbeitet. Die Ausstellung erz\u00e4hlt die Geschichte des K\u00f6nigreichs Benin und seiner Eroberung, und zeigt neben den historischen Objekten auch Werke zeitgen\u00f6ssischer K\u00fcnstler, etwa Filme, Textilien oder Bronzeg\u00fcsse, die heute noch nach auf traditionelle Weise hergestellt werden.<br \/>\nDie \u201eBenin-Bronzen\u201c nehmen eine besondere Stellung in der Debatte um die Dekolonisierung von Museen ein: 1897 eroberten britische Truppen das K\u00f6nigreich Benin, pl\u00fcnderten den k\u00f6niglichen Palast und exilierten Oba Ovonramwen, den letzten unabh\u00e4ngigen K\u00f6nig, nach Calabar. Tausende Objekte wurden nach der Invasion als Kriegsbeute nach London verschifft und dort ver\u00e4u\u00dfert. Zahlreiche weitere gepl\u00fcnderte Objekte blieben zumindest noch eine Zeit lang im kolonialen Nigeria; durch lokale Netzwerke von europ\u00e4ischen und afrikanischen Gesch\u00e4ftsleuten und H\u00e4ndlern gelangten dann auch viele dieser Werke in europ\u00e4ische und nordamerikanische Museen, auch in das Berliner Museum.<\/p>\n<p>Seit 2010 ist das Museum Mitglied der Benin Dialogue Group, in der Museen in Europa mit nigerianischen Partner*innen die Zukunft der Benin-Objekte in den Sammlungen der beteiligten H\u00e4user er\u00f6rtern. Durch diese Gespr\u00e4che wurde die Grundlage daf\u00fcr geschaffen, dass im August 2022 der Eigentums\u00fcbertrag der \u00fcber 500 \u201eBenin-Bronzen\u201c des Ethnologischen Museums von der Stiftung Preu\u00dfischer Kulturbesitz an den Staat Nigeria durchgef\u00fchrt wurde. Rund ein Drittel der \u00fcbereigneten Werke bleibt f\u00fcr zun\u00e4chst zehn Jahre als Leihgabe in Berlin und wird im Humboldt Forum ausgestellt.<\/p>\n<p>Die vor diesem Hintergrund kurzfristig neu konzeptionierte Benin-Ausstellung im Humboldt Forum tr\u00e4gt diesen aktuellen Prozessen Rechnung: Sie nimmt Bezug auf die Debatten um die Restitution der \u201eBenin-Bronzen\u201c und vermittelt ihre Sammlungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte zwischen Benin und Berlin. Die wenigen historischen Objekte, die als Leihgabe ausgestellt sind, werden in ihrem Kunstcharakter und ihrer zentralen Bedeutung f\u00fcr eine globale Kunstgeschichte betrachtet. Zum anderen steht ihre jeweilige Materialit\u00e4t als Erinnerungstr\u00e4ger und rituelles Inventar im Mittelpunkt. Ein dokumentarisch angelegter Teil fragt nach der Bedeutung der historischen Benin-Objekte f\u00fcr die moderne Kunst Nigerias und eine \u00c4sthetik der Dekolonisation. Kunstwerke zeitgen\u00f6ssischer nigerianischer K\u00fcnstler*innen und Designer*innen sind zu sehen, die sich Bildwelten, Techniken und Inhalte der Benin-K\u00fcnste angeeignet, in neue Materialien \u00fcbersetzt und umgedeutet haben. Victor Ehikhamenor bezieht sich in seinem Werk \u201eThe King, the Priest, the chosen one\u201c (2022) auf den K\u00f6nig von Benin in seiner Doppelfunktion als politischen Herrscher und wichtigsten Priester. Auf einem Wandteppich mit netzartigem Spitzenstoff umrahmen orange-rote Rosenkr\u00e4nze aus Plastik den rotgewandeten W\u00fcrdentr\u00e4ger, als Material dienen zudem Miniaturbronzen. Das Werk setzt sich mit den \u00e4sthetischen und inhaltlichen Prinzipien historischer Kunstwerke auseinander.<\/p>\n<p>Ein gro\u00dfer Arbeitstisch auf der Museumsfl\u00e4che bietet Platz f\u00fcr die Auseinandersetzung, Begegnung, das gemeinsame Forschen und Kuratieren mit Kooperationspartner*innen. Es soll die Komplexit\u00e4t und Vielstimmigkeit der Debatte um die Restitutionen auch jenseits der offiziellen Verhandlungen abgebildet werden. In Video-Statements erkl\u00e4ren deutsche und<br \/>\nnigerianische Wissenschaftler*innen, K\u00fcnstler*innen sowie Vertreter*innen von Museen und des K\u00f6nigshauses in Benin City multiperspektivisch die Geschichte und Bedeutung der \u201eBenin-Bronzen\u201c, ihre Sicht auf die aktuelle Debatte und blicken in die Zukunft.<\/p>\n<h5>Erweiterung 2024<\/h5>\n<p>In der prozessual angelegten Benin-Ausstellung werden in diesem Fr\u00fchjahr zwei weitere Vitrinen er\u00f6ffnet.<\/p>\n<p>Nimmt der erste Teil der Ausstellung Bezug auf die Restitutionsdebatten und die Kunstgeschichte Benins, so weiten die beiden neuen Vitrinen k\u00fcnftig die Perspektive auf das K\u00f6nigreich.
