The first Kunst-am-Bau Competition for the Humboldt Forum

The results of the first Kunst-am-Bau competition for the Humboldt Forum will be presented to the public in an exhibition at the Humboldt-Box.

This “percent for art” competition, the first in a total of four, pertains to the staircases above gates 1 and 5 in the Schlüter Courtyard. Cologne artists An Seebach and Christiane Stegat were chosen as the winners in yesterday’s jury meeting for the staircase over gate 1, with their work no. 1392 entitled GLOBAL BAROCC - CCORAB LABOLG. For the staircase directly opposite above gate 5, first prize went to entry no. 1389 (Untitled) by Berlin artist Tim Trantenroth. Second prize was awarded to work no. 1394 by Dico Kruijsse and Carolin Lange from Rotterdam entitled LICHTPAUSE. A special prize will also be awarded to work no. 1398 with the title BERLIN 1:1 in DOUALA by Berlin artist Erik Göngrich.

Design No. 1389

Auxiliary staircases on the second and third floors connect the two levels of the museum, behind the historic side gates 1 and 5 in the Schlüter Courtyard. It was for these two generously proportioned staircases, with their comfortable seating and wonderful views over the Schlüter Courtyard, that the Kunst-am-Bau competition was launched, with the goal of finding artistic interventions for the walls of these staircases and the space above them.

This Kunst-am-Bau competition and three further percent for art competitions for the Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss are being conducted as part of a construction project supervised by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning. This first art competition was an open-call, two-phase, anonymous competition in German and English. A sum of € 150,000 will be available for realizing the winning entries for each staircase. The artists were called upon to respond to the history of the building, its future use as an exhibition space and event venue, as a place of education and research in keeping with Humboldt’s ideas, as well as the building’s exterior appearance.

The jury convened for the first round under chairman Werner Schaub on 31.8. 2017 and on 1.9.2017, selecting eighteen artists from 222 entries to continue into the second round. The recipients of the above-mentioned prizes were chosen at the jury meeting on 12.12.2017 under his chairmanship.

The Humboldt Forum

Designed by Italian architect Franco Stella, the Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss is a unique and vibrant location for encountering the world’s cultures. The three Baroque palace facades overlooking the Lustgarten, Schlossfreiheit and Schlossplatz are currently being reconstructed. But facing east towards the Spree, the Humboldt Forum presents an uncompromisingly contemporary aspect. The three Baroque facades in the Schlüter Courtyard are also being rebuilt. Here, too, the fourth facade will be modern in design.

The exhibition ist organized by the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR).
