They are daughters \u2014 and also artists, entrepreneurs, sportswomen, or activists. Their stories are shaped not only by who they are, but by the relationships they\u2019ve had to inspiring caretakers, including their fathers. In this film series french filmmaker Marina Gning has interviewed senegalese fathers and daughters about their often close, motivating, inspiring and empowering relationships.<\/p>\n

In Senegal, the role of the father often comes with social, economic, and familial responsibility. Yet beyond this visible role, little is said about how fathers connect \u2014 or fail to connect \u2014 with their daughters on a personal, emotional level. Especially in a patriarchal society, where the conversation around female empowerment tends to focus on mothers, sisters, or women alone, the father\u2013daughter bond remains largely unexplored.<\/p>\n

This film and portrait series gives space to these relationships: the shared memories, the silences, the gestures of care, and the tensions. Through interviews and dual perspectives, fathers speak about their daughters, and daughters speak about their fathers \u2014 not to idealize them, but to understand the role this relationship \u2013 or a similar relationshop with another caretaker and role model \u2013 plays in shaping identity, trust, freedom, and belonging.<\/p>\n

As part of the film series Marina Gning also filmed an illuminating interview with senegalese anthropologist and professor Cheikh Sadibou Sakho about positive ways for men to show emotions, to develop their masculinity and fatherrole in a socially more flexible way although they may come from a traditional partriarchal understanding of being a father.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
