To mark the 120th anniversary of the East Asian Art Collection \u2013 which has weathered many turbulent times throughout its history \u2013 this exhibition presents the figure of the\u00a0fisherman: he embodies, among others, the idea of escaping from the life of a civil servant in a world torn apart by conflicts and inter-dynastic wars.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A highly symbolic motif in Chinese painting, the fisherman remains nameless, symbolises resilience and is typically depicted amidst an idyllic landscape. Although these landscapes appear peaceful, they are also representations of withdrawal from tumultuous, stressful, and dangerous environments. While an empty boat with a loose rope is freedom and independence to some, it may also act as a reminder of flight from a place one once called home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
