In India, the gate belongs to one of the oldest and most important preserved Buddhist sanctuaries and is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The copy sets a counterpoint to the reconstructed baroque facades and makes visible from the outside, what the Humboldt Forum stands for: the diversity of the world in the centre of Berlin.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t    <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n<section class=\"block block-gallery\">\n\t<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n\t\t<div              <div class=\"copy\"><h5><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">MASTERLY CRAFTSMANSHIP<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The new copy of 2022 made of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">natural stone was enabled thanks <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to the preserved old plaster moulds, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">held in the depot of the Staatliche <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Museen zu Berlin. These were 3D<\/span><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">scanned, before being pre-milled <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">with the help of CAD technology <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">and modern robots. In a next step, <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the sculptural work was manually <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">handcrafted, with the help of<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">enlarged and detailed photos of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the gate in Dahlem, as well as in <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">comparison to the original copies <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">from the 19th century.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h5>ORIGINAL AND COPY<\/h5>\n<p>Intricate scenes can be discovered on the nearly 10-metre-high gate: episodes from the life of Buddha, legends of pilgrimage sites, framed by fortune geniusses, elephants and peacocks. Figurative depictions of Buddha however cannot be found. Back then, Buddha was represented in imagery by way of symbols, such as an empty throne or footprints. The original gate dates from the 1st century and still serves as one of four entrances to the \u201cGreat Stupa\u201d. A stupa is a hemispherically \u201cburial\u201d mound, inside which relics of the Buddha and of Buddhist saints, considered benedictory, are kept.<br \/>\nA plaster cast of the original gate, purchased from London, was on display in the entrance hall of the K\u00f6nigliches Museum f\u00fcr V\u00f6lkerkunde Berlin from 1886. A cast of this fortunately preserved copy was made of artificial stone in 1970 and placed in the garden of the Museum f\u00fcr Indische Kunst in Berlin-Dahlem.
