Such combs were not used for hair care but served as a sign of high rank. The object entered the collections of the Berlin V\u00f6lkerkundemuseum (today the Ethnologisches Museum, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin) via the Royal Prussian Art Collection. Her iwi affiliations are Ng\u0101ti T\u016bwharetoa, Te Arawa, Ng\u0101ti Whakaue, T\u016bhourangi, Ng\u0101ti Tumatawera, and Tainui. She lives in Wellington, Aotearoa \/ New Zealand, and is the author of four novels: The Graphologist\u2019s Apprentice, Bugs, Legacy, and Kurangaituku. She is also co-editor, with Witi Ihimaera, of an anthology of M\u0101ori myths, P\u016br\u0101kau, published in 2019.
