Poetry and literature play an important role in Persian culture.<\/p>\n

Every child in Iran knows the stories of Amu Nowruz, also known as Baba Nowruz. This figure from Iranian folk culture appears every year at the beginning of spring together with his companion Hadji Firuz to announce the start of the new year.<\/p>\n

On the eve of the equinox, when the beginning of the new year is celebrated in Iranian culture, Amu Nowruz brings gifts to children, similar to his counterparts in Christian culture, such as Father Christmas.<\/p>\n

Amu Nowruz is described as an elderly man with grey or white hair and usually a full beard, wearing a felt hat, a long blue coat, a walking stick and a pair of linen trousers. He appears as a wise man who passes on the ancient history of the New Year to the young.<\/p>\n
