There is something that happens when you enter Lagos: the body suddenly knows something the conscious mind has not yet understood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lagos demands a particular intelligence from those who inhabit it. Plans collapse, routes disappear. Electricity goes off, generators come on. Traffic rearranges time. Prices change overnight. Somehow, life continues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every break produces another rhythm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While writing Afrobeats Has Reached the End of Innocence on my blog (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/qudusonikeku.com\/blog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">qudusonikeku.com\/blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), I found myself returning to Fela\u2019s Confusion and Confusion Break Bone, two reflections on Lagos separated by decades. I became interested in what happens when confusion ceases to be an interruption and becomes an atmosphere\u2014a condition one learns to inhabit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>What kind of body does confusion produce?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps improvisation here is more than an artistic method. It is a technology for living: the body\u2019s capacity to listen, negotiate, reroute, invent, and continue when certainty disappears. This became one of the starting points for LAGOS is a R.A.V.E.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Lagos is never only what is immediately visible. Multiple times and realities occupy the same geography: ancestral and hypermodern, sacred and profane, street economy and digital economy, church vigil beside nightlife, masquerade and algorithm. Humans share the city with ancestors, spirits, animals, machines, rituals, objects and memories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>They are all Lagosing.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The city becomes choreography without a single choreographer\u2014millions of negotiations, collisions, interruptions and recoveries continually composing and recomposing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The eleven young artists making the work with me are all graduates of The QSchool. They belong to a generation for whom Lagos is neither an idea nor an exotic spectacle. It is lived knowledge. The city is carried differently in each of their bodies: in language, gesture, humour, fashion, spirituality, music, hustle, frustration, pleasure, memory and desire.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calling them simply dancers doesn\u2019t quite describe them either. They move freely between dance, music, performance, sound, fashion, visual culture and the languages of contemporary Lagos youth. The work has followed their multiplicity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Somewhere between furious dancing, live electronic music, soundscape, archive, fashion, ritual, rave culture and collective euphoria, we are attempting to create something that does not represent Lagos so much as behave like it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For me, Lagos is increasingly difficult to separate from the question of who I have become. I was born here, left, spent years making work elsewhere, and eventually returned. Since then, I have tried to build within the city\u2014works, communities, institutions, possibilities\u2014while the city has continued working on me in return.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>I have been Lagosing. And I have been Lagosed.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps that reciprocity sits at the heart of the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LAGOS is a R.A.V.E. that unfolds as a journey through a Lagos day, beginning at 4:30 am and travelling towards 3 am. But time here is never entirely linear. The hours shift between current affairs, historical events, recent memory and things that have perhaps not happened yet. Past, present and future keep leaking into one another, much as they do in the city itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is at once a tribute, a reflection and a postcard from Lagos. It doesn\u2019t attempt to resolve the city\u2019s contradictions.
