They\u00a0are\u00a0habitats of extraordinary\u00a0diversity, protect\u00a0coastlines, and contribute to the ecological\u00a0balance. Yet\u00a0today, they\u00a0are\u00a0among the most\u00a0threatened\u00a0systems on Earth. Rising sea\u00a0temperatures, ocean\u00a0acidification, and human interference\u00a0are\u00a0taking\u00a0their toll on them\u00a0worldwide.<\/p>\n<p data-renderer-start-pos=\"6731\" data-local-id=\"62c2cea2ade9\">As part of Berlin Science Week, the Humboldt Lab will focus on these\u00a0fascinating\u00a0life\u00a0forms on November 7. The event\u00a0opens\u00a0up\u00a0new\u00a0perspectives on organisms\u00a0that\u00a0defy\u00a0scientific and cultural\u00a0interpretations. Researchers and artists\u00a0from\u00a0various\u00a0disciplines will share\u00a0their\u00a0perspectives and explore\u00a0what marine ecosystems\u00a0reveal\u00a0about\u00a0Earth\u2019s\u00a0history, the climate\u00a0crisis, and the relationship\u00a0between\u00a0humans and the non-human world.<\/p>\n<p data-renderer-start-pos=\"7164\" data-local-id=\"4001c01d76c1\">The focus\u00a0is on the question of a culture of care: How does\u00a0our\u00a0view of these\u00a0ecosystems change when\u00a0we\u00a0understand\u00a0them as co-creators of complex\u00a0communities? Their skeletons also serve as archivesof\u00a0ocean\u00a0history. Chemical analyses and X-ray\u00a0images\u00a0offer\u00a0clues\u00a0about\u00a0how\u00a0water\u00a0temperatures and environmental conditions\u00a0changed\u00a0during\u00a0their\u00a0lifetimes,\u00a0and how the corals\u00a0responded. How do we\u00a0read\u00a0these\u00a0traces, and what\u00a0can\u00a0they\u00a0tell\u00a0us\u00a0about the future of reefs in a warming\u00a0world?<\/p>\n<p data-renderer-start-pos=\"8368\" data-local-id=\"8d2dd13f030c\">Laura Lehnhoff is a doctoral\u00a0candidate and lecturer at the Institute of Geological Sciences at Freie Universit\u00e4t Berlin. She\u00a0studied\u00a0biology\u00a0first in Marburg, then in Bremen &#8211; since the latter\u00a0university\u00a0offered a focus on marine biology and geosciences &#8211; and spent\u00a0one\u00a0year in China. After working in laboratories and museums, she\u00a0returned to her research\u00a0niche at the intersection of biology and geochemistry. She\u00a0received her doctorate\u00a0with a thesis on the writer Stendhal and has\u00a0taught\u00a0literature at the Universities of Munich and Konstanz, among\u00a0others.<\/p>\n<p data-renderer-start-pos=\"14870\" data-local-id=\"eddc4980b762\">In 2018, she\u00a0started\u00a0working at the Deutsches Hygiene-Museum in Dresden. From 2019 to 2023, she was a curator at BIOTOPIA, the new\u00a0natural\u00a0history\u00a0museum in Munich. She\u00a0writes\u00a0regularly for various\u00a0newspapers, magazines and publishing\u00a0houses. Her work\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0shown at venues\u00a0including the New Media Society in Tehran, the AHNE Festival in Helsinki, the 13th Havana\u00a0Biennial, and the Museo del Mar in Vigo, as well as in several\u00a0group and solo exhibitions in Berlin, where\u00a0she\u00a0has\u00a0lived\u00a0since 2011.<\/p>\n<p data-renderer-start-pos=\"15676\" data-local-id=\"f6416c10721d\">Elena Alonso Fern\u00e1ndez\u2019s\u00a0artistic\u00a0practice\u00a0is\u00a0participatory and research-based. In recent\u00a0years, she\u00a0has\u00a0focused on marine ecosystems and explored\u00a0their\u00a0complex\u00a0relationships\u00a0with\u00a0humans. After working in laboratories and museums, she returned to her research niche at the intersection of biology and geochemistry. Her work\u00a0combines\u00a0design, biology, and anthropology. The ocean\u00a0is at the center of her design research, particularly in relation to queer ecological\u00a0concepts. She\u00a0is a lecturer and researcher at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) and is\u00a0pursuing a practice-based\u00a0Ph.D. on the topic of \u201cSymbiOcean. Design in Troubled Waters,\u201d in which\u00a0she\u00a0examines\u00a0artificial\u00a0reefs and the creation of marine habitats as a form of sympoietic design. She\u00a0is\u00a0part of the \u201cInterfacing the Ocean\u201d project (ZHdK), funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, and an associate\u00a0researcher at the \u201cMatters of Activity\u201d
