This is the theme of the second event in the Terrible Beauty discussion series.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Habitats for wild animals are shrinking as a result of continually expanding human populations. This is causing wild animals, including elephants, to stray ever closer to populated areas \u2013 resulting in conflicts between humans and wild animals. Because humans fear losing their cattle or agricultural land because of wild animal incursions, the animals are often killed. Maureen Kinyanjui and Ben-Okita Ouma, both animal welfare experts, demonstrate from differing perspectives how animal-human conflict leads to exploitative practice. During her professional career, the University of Edinburgh PhD student noticed that communities living near protected areas are most affected by food insecurity. He is currently actively involved in the conservation landscape and land use planning in Kenya in an effort to secure wildlife corridors and dispersal areas \u2013 one of Kenya\u2019s Vision 2030 development blueprint projects.
