Memories form communities. They define groups towards the outside, but can also exclude others on the inside.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The German culture of remembrance is considered exemplary by many, especially abroad. However, important gaps in memory have become apparent in recent years, especially with regard to the colonial past or the continuity of right-wing extremism and terrorism. Critics accuse the German culture of remembrance of having become a mere ritual and of ignoring social changes.<\/p>\n

How has the culture of remembrance changed in recent years? What competing memories exist? Who actually remembers, and who or what is forgotten in the process?
