What does it mean to be a Turkish man or a Turkish woman? How do we perceive these identities and what notions have been conveyed to us about them? Authors Feridun Zaimo\u011flu and Burcu Argat read from their works and talk about migration and gender codes at BERLIN GLOBAL.<\/p>\n

Author Feridun Zaimo\u011flu first found literary success in 1995 with his book Kanak Sprak<\/em>. 28 years later, this work remains as relevant as ever in the discourse around immigration. In the book, the German writer of Turkish origin gives voice to 24 male figures often portrayed by society as losers, victims, childishly immature or primitive: \u201cThe Kanaken<\/em> are given the blame for customs and rites. Seen from outside, they only appear as a shapeless mass of delinquents that one presumes to know by their external appearance and \u2018special characteristics\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her new novel Zaman Durduk\u00e7a<\/em> (As Long as Time Stands Still), Turkish, Berlin-based curator and author Burcu Argat tells the story of a Turkish woman, Leyla, who flees a harem to 1920s Berlin. Her escape is described as an act of liberation \u2013 until the transfer of power to the National Socialists and Leyla’s consequent return to Istanbul. Through her protagonist, Argat examines a woman’s search for freedom: her fights for survival and reasons for giving up her homeland<\/span> to emigrate.<\/p>\n

At BERLIN GLOBAL, Feridun Zaimo\u011flu and Burcu Argat will present passages from their books and discuss the themes of their work with moderator Idil Efe. They will talk about how to navigate social codes predominantly associated with men and women read as migrant.<\/p>\n

The reading is part of the Open Space \u201c30 kg\u201d<\/a>. In this project, led by Burcu Argat and Izim Turan, seven women who immigrated from Turkey share their thoughts on migration and (gender) identity in the exhibition BERLIN GLOBAL. They talk about codes and objects once taken for granted in Turkey that are now sorely missed, or which have lost their significance in a liberating way. The Open Space can be seen in the BERLIN GLOBAL exhibition until 30 October 2023.<\/p>\n

Feridun Zaimo\u011flu ilk edebi ba\u015far\u0131s\u0131n\u0131 1995 senesinde “Kanak Sprak. 24 Mi\u00dft\u00f6ne vom Rande der Gesellschaft” adl\u0131 kitabi ile elde etti. . 28 y\u0131l sonra dahi, kitap g\u00f6\u00e7 konusunda hala g\u00fcncelli\u011fini korumaktad\u0131r. T\u00fcrk k\u00f6kenli Alman yazar, kitab\u0131nda \u00e7o\u011fu zaman ma\u011flup, ma\u011fdur, olgunla\u015fmam\u0131\u015f ya da ilkel olarak tasvir edilen 24 erke\u011fe yer veriyor: “`Kanaken\u00b4 olarak hitap edilenler su\u00e7lanarak gelenek ve t\u00f6relerden sorumlu tutulurlar. Kar\u015f\u0131dan bak\u0131ld\u0131\u011f\u0131nda, sadece d\u0131\u015f g\u00f6r\u00fcn\u00fc\u015fleri ve >belirli \u00f6zellikleriyle< amorf bir alt tabaka kitlesi olarak s\u0131fatland\u0131r\u0131labileceklerine inan\u0131l\u0131r.”<\/em><\/p>\n

Berlin’de ya\u015fayan T\u00fcrk k\u00fcrat\u00f6r ve yazar Burcu Argat, yeni roman\u0131 \u201cZaman Durduk\u00e7a\u201dda \u00a01920\u2019lerde haremden Berlin’e ka\u00e7an bir T\u00fcrk kad\u0131n\u0131n\u0131n, Leyla\u2019n\u0131nhik\u00e2yesini anlat\u0131yor. Nasyonal Sosyalistler\u2019in iktidar\u0131 ele ge\u00e7irmesine ve Leyla\u2019n\u0131n \u0130stanbul’a d\u00f6nmek zorunda kalmas\u0131na kadar bu ka\u00e7\u0131\u015f bir \u00f6zg\u00fcrle\u015fme eylemi olarak tan\u0131mlan\u0131yor.. Argat, kitap boyunca Leyla \u00f6zelinde kad\u0131nlar\u0131n \u00f6zg\u00fcrl\u00fck aray\u0131\u015f\u0131n\u0131 ve tek ba\u015f\u0131na ayakta kalma m\u00fccadelelerini ve bu sebeplerle g\u00f6\u00e7mek, \u00fclkelerini terk etmek, s\u00fcrekli yer de\u011fi\u015ftirmek zorunda kalmalar\u0131n\u0131 ele al\u0131yor.<\/em><\/p>\n

BERLIN GLOBAL kapsam\u0131nda, sunuculu\u011funu \u0130dil Efe\u2019nin yapaca\u011f\u0131 etkinlikte Feridun Zaimo\u011flu ve Burcu Argat kitaplar\u0131ndan pasajlar okuyup, g\u00f6\u00e7men olarak tan\u0131mlanan kad\u0131n ve erkek kimlikleriyle ili\u015fkilendirilen toplumsal kodlar\u0131n anlamlar\u0131 ve etkileri \u00fczerine konu\u015facaklar.<\/em><\/p>\n

Burcu Argat ve \u0130zim Turan’\u0131n bu projesinde, T\u00fcrkiye’den g\u00f6\u00e7 etmi\u015f yedi kad\u0131n, BERLIN GLOBAL’deki bir sergi alan\u0131nda g\u00f6\u00e7 ve cinsiyet kavram\u0131 hakk\u0131ndaki d\u00fc\u015f\u00fcncelerini payla\u015f\u0131yorlar. T\u00fcrkiye’de g\u00fcnl\u00fck hayat\u0131n bir par\u00e7as\u0131 olarak kan\u0131ksanm\u0131\u015f, oysa Berlin\u2019de hi\u00e7bir ge\u00e7erlili\u011fi olmayankodlardan ve nesnelerden bahsediyorlar.
