Is there an autonomous republic of art that has survived across time and through many places? Do objects have autonomy?\u00a0For\u00a0Objects Talk Back\u00a0<\/em>Madeleine\u00a0Thien\u00a0and\u00a0Rawi\u00a0Hage engage with\u00a0these questions by examining\u00a0two objects which came to Berlin via collections from the Turfan expeditions (1902-1914), from the region of the Northern Silk Road (present-day Xinjiang<\/span> Uyghur Autonomous Region): the fragment of a Manichaean manuscript written in Uyghur and Turkic; and a wall painting of \u201cThree Uyghur Princes<\/a>\u201c, donors who contributed to the construction of a grotto in the\u00a0Bezeklik\u00a0Thousand\u00a0Buddha Caves.<\/p>\n

Together, the writers examine the contained universes of transitory objects. Rather than thinking of histories as something to be controlled or possessed, they invite us to observe the movement, uprooting, displacement, migration, resettlement and flight of objects, within the context of conflicting yet organically connected beliefs.<\/p>\n

Madeleine\u00a0Thien\u00a0approaches\u00a0the \u201cThree Uyghur Princes\u201dthrough fiction, while\u00a0Rawi\u00a0Hage\u00a0responds\u00a0to the Manichaean manuscript\u00a0with narrative non-fiction. Both\u00a0centre\u00a0the experience of encounter, which \u2013 they say \u2013 always remakes us.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
