DURCHLÜFTEN 2025 – A Transcultural Sound Experience Under Berlin’s Skies
For free, open air and under palm trees: This summer again, the DURCHLÜFTEN festival transforms the Humboldt Forum’s large courtyard into a vibrant meeting point of sound, rhythm, and culture. Over four weekends, the stage will pulse with music from across the globe: from the raw energy of Mexican Cumbia-punk to the hypnotic groove of Kenyan Dodo Blues, from the electrifying syncopations of Congolese Soukous to the powerful messages of Afro-futuristic big bands. Caribbean-infused Japanese folk, soulful jazz, hip hop, and the joy and resilience of Frafra-gospel round off this celebration of sound— borderless, multi-perspective, and irresistably danceable!
JULY 17 – AUGUST 9, 2025 | THURSDAY TO SATURDAY | 19:00
With 24 live acts and 12 DJs altogether, each of the 12 evenings is a journey through diverse musical landscapes—one moment in the bustling streets of Mexico City, the desert nights of Niger, the pulsating beats of Nairobi, or the hidden grooves of Tokyo — before landing back in the heart of Berlin’s ever-evolving club culture.
More than just a festival, DURCHLÜFTEN creates an open, communal space where music becomes a language of connection. The festival is set within a site deeply woven into Berlin’s layered history and a building hosting cultural belongings from many cultures of the world. The festival invites reflection on movement — of people, sounds, and narratives — turning the Schlüterhof into a stage where global voices come together to reclaim and reshape cultural spaces through sound.
And the best part? It’s free, it’s outdoors, and it’s for everyone. Whether you come to dance, discover new sounds, or simply enjoy a warm Berlin evening, it is yours to explore! Let’s celebrate together under Berlin’s open skies!

A Personal Note from the Curator, Melissa Perales
“DURCHLÜFTEN’s mission has been since the beginning not only to create a great event but also to build cultural bridges – connecting artists from overseas, local talents, and members of the European diaspora. By bringing their stories, languages, and musical traditions to life outside the conventional museum spaces, we aim to experience these cultures tangibly, in the moment, and shared with others. Each artist is given the opportunity to connect with new audiences and share their craft beyond commercial markets, enriching the cultural fabric of the festival and its attendees. A global and local dialogue through music.
This year, as curator, my goal is to continue spotlighting dynamic artists from Africa, South
America, Asia, and beyond while also examining how some of these artists bring their vibrant traditions to their new homes and reinterpret and weave them into new musical identities without losing the essence of the sonic home. Hybridity in music is the theme. The festival honors the roots of these sounds while embracing their evolution, showing how music transcends borders and speaks to our shared human experience.
In a world that grows ever smaller, it’s increasingly clear how interconnected we all are – and how every country’s stories resonate on the global stage.
Festival Highlights
This year, we’re continuing our partnerships with incredible events like the renowned Zanzibar festival Sauti Za Busara and Berlin’s own internationally acclaimed XJAZZ festival. These collaborations help us build sustainable networks, connecting artists and fans alike from all corners of the globe.
Among the many artists pushing boundaries and mixing sounds is ODD OKODDO, a Kenyan-German duo featuring Olith Ratego and Sven Kacirek. Ratego, who sings in the soulful dodo style from Lake Victoria, calls his music “dodo blues,” while Kacirek’s expertise in production brings a unique blend of Kenyan and German influences. During their 2025 European tour, they will be joined by the legendary Ogoya Nengo, the queen of Luo music, whose powerful voice has defined traditional Luo ceremonies for decades. At 80 years old, Ogoya brings an electrifying energy to the stage.
