El sueño del Telar que durmió por la tarde

Digital collages, 2024, commissioned by the Humboldt Forum Foundation for the 99 Questions Gathering. (2024)

“El sueño del Telar que durmió por la tarde” (English: The Dream of the Loom That Slept in the Afternoon) is a song that echoes in the wind in the form of images that move, dance, and breathe while the eyes are closed. It is a dialogue between the machine, the natural landscape, and a very distant dream. How would a traditional loom describe what it feels when used by generations upon generations of weavers living amidst the mountains? How would I myself translate these images, deciphered in my own imagination, from a practice that has been lost over time? Starting from the premise that I do not recognize hierarchies between technologies (just as the microchip is as technological as a cassava sieve, since both are technical instruments developed to solve human problems), I begin to imagine what story a loom used at Union Textiles Semillas might tell.

This story begins at the bottom of the Kosmograf and winds its way upward, with each layer playing its part in this cosmos.

First, the fire deep within the earth gives birth to life; then, the surface waters refresh the land with their shimmering movements; mountains rise from the sea, providing a monumental setting for this daily dance; in the sky, luminous bodies and stars flicker and fall in an endless loop; and finally, the sky meets the earth in a blaze of fire, melting everything back together.
