What is family? What form does a family in Germany take? What does it look like in other parts of the world? How does it shape us as individuals, how does it determine our interactions with one another?

Family cannot be clearly defined. But we can acknowledge its diversity and discover its potentials – as well as its fateful quality.

At ten meeting hubs you are invited to share your own experiences, perspectives, and dreams, ask questions, make new discoveries, and critically examine various aspects of the topic – from family constellations and the shared table to personal pet names, from global family histories and experiences of kinship to memories of moments of transition. All of these express the diverse spectrum of Family Matters.

The programme and the exhibition have been jointly curated by all the stakeholders involved at the Humboldt Forum: Stiftung Humboldt Forum im Berliner Schloss (SHF), Ethnologisches Museum and Museum für Asiatische Kunst (Stiftung Preußischer Kulturbesitz / Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), Stiftung Stadtmuseum Berlin, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Overall curatorial directorship: Dr. Laura Goldenbaum (SHF)
