A living room and a place of comfort in Berlin’s historic centre: On 10 November 2023, the Johanniter, together with the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace and the shop operator MUSON, reopened the “Ort der Wärme”. This marked the start of the second winter season for people in need during the cold season.
All people are welcome at the “Ort der Wärme” – but especially those who are homeless, socially and economically disadvantaged or lonely. The warmth lounge in the centre of the capital is open daily – except Tuesdays – from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. until the end of March 2024.
This special place of inclusion offers a warm place to stay during the day, free hot drinks and snacks, a reading and donation corner as well as counselling services. And above all: protection and security. With their offer, the Berlin St John organisation not only wants to provide warmth, but also a space for encouraging conversations and low-threshold social integration and participation.
The place of warmth quickly became a safe space for many people in need in the winter of 2022/2023 – almost 10,000 visits were recorded. Up to 150 guests came on cold days.
The guests will be looked after by volunteers from the Johanniter organisation. The premises and infrastructure will be provided by the Humboldt Forum Foundation in the Berlin Palace and MUSON. In addition, the photo exhibition “mensch_sein” by the Rostock photographer Andreas Duerst will be shown, which portrays the guests and helpers of Johanniter-Kältehilfe in Berlin. Small concerts and artistic performances are also planned.
You can support the project: Donations in kind such as coffee, packaged confectionery, clothing and unopened hygiene articles are accepted by the Johanniter by prior arrangement. Further information can be found at [email protected].
