Dance that touches the heart

Around 40 young dancers transform the foyer of the Humboldt Forum into a vibrant stage. This performance focuses on inner awakening and the pursuit of greatness and individuality. At the same time, it deals with the struggle with doubts and the fear of standing alone. The dancers make all these tensions visible – with powerful music and choreography that oscillates between self-assertion and vulnerability.

The tension between individuality and integration creates a pull that is almost impossible to resist: every movement becomes an individual message and reveals the personality of each performer.

Renowned US-American choreographer Nicholas Palmquist devised this performance especially for the Humboldt Forum. Dancers from Germany and five other European countries come together for the first time to make an impressive statement of young artistic strength – courageous, passionate and full of life. Desperado, based on a song by the Eagles, is being created as part of the 10th Federal Competition Biennale Tanzausbildung hosted in 2026 by the Staatliche Ballett- und Artistikschule Berlin.

Participants

Nicholas Palmquist is an internationally recognised teacher and choreographer. As a freelance dancer in New York City, his work includes films such as In the Heights, SNL, The Tonight Show and Netflix series, as well as live shows with the American Dance Machine, the Tony Awards and the Radio City Rockettes.

He has been featured in Vogue, Dance Magazine, Pointe, Numero China, and brands such as Kenzo, Nordstrom, and Zalando. Nicholas has taught masterclasses at Juilliard, ABT, the Mozarteum Salzburg, and Orsolina 28. Known for his cross-genre style, he teaches worldwide—in Italy, France, Japan, Brazil, and other countries. He has created works with the Semperoper Ballet, Ballet x Schwerin and the Palucca University of Dance, and has taught at the Berlin State Ballet.

Biennale Tanzausbildung
In the Humboldt Forum's foyer there is a 17 meter high media tower, called "cosmograph". It gives visitors comprehensive information about their visit and can transform into an art and light installation.
