Afghan dances stand for joy of life, energy, and community. They arise from the rhythm of the music and invite empathy, clapping and moving along. At the center is the Atan, the most well-known Afghan national dance, which is danced in powerful circular movements and develops a captivating dynamism as the tempo increases. It combines rhythm, movement, and emotion into an intense experience that captivates both dancers and audience alike.
The Atan is complemented by other traditional dances such as Qarsak, Logari, Herati, Kabuli, Wardagi, and Shomali. Each of these dances has its own character—sometimes elegant and playful, sometimes calm and dignified, sometimes lively and expressive. What they all share is a close connection to the music and a strong sense of community that brings every performance to life.
Accompanied by the rhythmic sounds of traditional instruments and enhanced by colorful clothing, the dances unfold their full effect. They are not only performed but lived—as an expression of culture, identity, and joy. Afghan dances captivate through their power, their diversity, and their ability to connect people regardless of origin or language.
The Hewad Group is the first Afghan dance group to perform professionally and to have all of these dances in its repertoire.
Let yourself be inspired by the joy of life and the rhythmic movements of the dancers!
