The word “Tianguis” comes from the Nahuatl term “tianquiztli” and means “public market.” It refers to a place of street trading, bartering, buying, and selling – but above all, it is a joyful and festive meeting point for families and friends.

This family celebration invites children and their accompanying adults to honor and remember those who have passed away and accompanied them during their lives – and to celebrate these memories together.

Inspired by the atmosphere of a traditional Mexican market, the Tianguis by Calaca e.V. invites visitors to create everything needed for an Ofrenda. From workshops making papel picado (cut-paper garlands) and paper flowers to pan de muerto (bread of the dead) and more – there’s something for everyone. Traditional figures of the Day of the Dead also make appearances, offering surprises and entertainment for all ages.

In the Humboldt Forum's foyer there is a 17 meter high media tower, called "cosmograph". It gives visitors comprehensive information about their visit and can transform into an art and light installation.
