Funke Akindele, Tobi Makinde / Nigeria 2022 / 140 min. / FSK 12 / English, Igbo, Hausa, Pidgin, Yoruba with English subtitles

In this polygamous extended family, people don’t exactly treat each other with kid gloves when conflicts arise. On the contrary: the half-sisters Yejide and Awele, who have been enemies since birth, and their children pester and attack each other so inventively that the whole neighborhood gets involved. The venue for the fights is Yejide’s successful street restaurant – and Awele’s freshly opened kitchen competition directly across the street! The family drama tells in flashbacks how this enmity came about – and: how the clan then finds its way back together. Nigerian audiences flocked to this action-packed family drama, and the local press praised the film as a timely rediscovery of fine Nollywood traditions.

Funke Akindele

Funke Akindele ranks among the most popular and influential celebrities of the Nigerian film industry. The self-taught actress and producer received multiple awards, among others the “Hottest movie personality- City People Award”. Funke Akindele is the co-director, producer and leading lady in “Battle on Buka Street”, which was last year’s highest grossing movie in Nigeria in 2022 and yet another jewel in the crown of this female power house.

Funke Akindele was born on the 24th of August 1977. As a young girl, Funke has always had a dream to become a famous actress, writer, director and producer. Her mum discovered her talent and she supported and inspired her. Staying true to her dreams, she started writing scripts in her secondary school days. On the sideline, she also cultivated another passion- a love for debating. Funke is the CEO of SceneOne Productions Ltd and Funke Akindele Network (FAN).

Funke’s journey into the world of entertainment was challenging and filled with auditions. In the early years she was considered ‘not fit for the role’ at the end of each session. For a long time the coveted lead roles weren’t forthcoming; not even a ‘silent blink’ otherwise called ‘waka pass’. But as an upcoming actress craving for a break she never gave up. Finally she got a minor role in ‘Naked wire’, a movie produced by Opa Williams.

In 1997 – she was turning 20 – Funke attended an audition at Swift Studios for a TV series on teenage reproductive health, titled ‘I Need to Know’. She got the lead role of ‘Bisi’ where she had to talk like a teenager. By this time she was a law student at the University of Lagos. For her, ‘I need to Know’, sponsored by UNFPA is a project that she has missed a lot having worked on the set for four years. After graduation, she got a few roles- ‘Egg of life’, ‘Break Up’ and ‘Final Whistle’ after which she joined the Yoruba movie industry pitching tent with the ‘Odunfa caucus’ – led by the trio of Yinka Quadri,Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) and Abbey Lanre. In 2004 she produced her first movie titled ‘Ojo Ketala’ (on the 13th) to launch herself into the market. She has 8 movies to her credit and they include, ‘Eta’nu’ (Grudge), ‘Agbefo’ (Catch in the Air),’Ekuro’ (Till death), ‘Maku’, ‘Jenifa’, ‘The Return of Jenifa’, ‘Taiwo Taiwo’, & ‘Apaadi’ (a multi million naira movie with over 200 cast). Her TV series ‘Tagged Jenifa’s Diary’ is presently syndicated nationwide. Her blockbuster movie ‘Omo Ghetto- The Saga” was the highest grossing movie in the cinema in 2020/2021 grossing over 600million Naira. in 2022, she broke her own record of highest grossing movie in cinemas with another dynamic movie titled BATTLE ON BUKA STREET with over 700 million Naira worth.

To Funke, acting is a talent and a gift from God. Her mum remains her role model, while the likes of Liz Benson, Joke Jacobs, Tunde Kelani, Kate Henshaw and Bukky Wright influenced her career. Apart from writing and producing, she likes to express herself through fashion and dancing. Funke owes her success in the make-believe world to God, her parents (especially her mum) Lloyd Weaver, Kunle Coker, Opa Williams, Andy Amanechi, Yinka Quadri,Taiwo Hassan, Abbey Lanre, Biola Olatunde, Alhaji Akeem Balogun (Olasco) & her fans.
