Tran Thanh / Vietnam 2023 / 102 min. / FSK 12 / Vietnamese with English subtitles
Five strong women from three generations and a rather useless man under one roof – there’s always something going on! Especially since the matriarch is the proud owner of a popular cookshop, who rigorously tries to determine the family rhythm. When the younger daughter Ngoc Nhi falls in love with a charmer who comes from a better background and promises her a different, freer life, the established order of her family is thrown out of joint. This brilliant success with Vietnamese audiences owes its popularity not least to its sophisticated examination of traditional role attributions: In this film, all family members are fully occupied with adapting their life together to a present in which they have long since arrived as individuals.
A cash bar and international snacks create an outdoor summer atmosphere in the Schlüterhof.
