The Ofrenda, a lavishly decorated altar of about 40 square meters, is the centerpiece of the Mexican Day of the Dead festivities. After the ceremonial opening, it is adorned with flowers, candles, handicrafts, fruit, cakes, sweets, sodas, liquor, and cigarettes – gifts for the departed. Visitors are warmly invited to bring offerings as well, such as photos or candles in memory of their loved ones. In this way, the altar grows over the course of the festival and fills with mementos.
The opening and closing ceremonies take place each day of the festival, accompanied by traditional rhythm instruments such as rattles and bells, as well as conch shells, to bid farewell to the departed.
