The Ofrenda, a lavishly decorated altar of about 4square metres, is the centerpiece of the Mexican Day of the Dead festivities. After the ceremonial opening, it is adorned with flowers, candles, handicrafts, fruit, cakes, sweets, sodas, liquor, and cigarettes – gifts for the departed. Visitors are warmly invited to bring offerings of their own, such as photos or candles for their loved ones. In this way, the altar grows over the course of the festival and fills with mementos.

The opening and closing ceremonies take place each day of the festival, accompanied by traditional rhythm instruments such as rattles and bells, as well as conch shells, to bid farewell to the departed.

In the Humboldt Forum's foyer there is a 17 meter high media tower, called "cosmograph". It gives visitors comprehensive information about their visit and can transform into an art and light installation.
