March 21 is World Day for Glaciers. To mark the occasion, Meet the Scientist is focusing on global glacier melt in the Alps, the Himalayas, and Patagonia. Glaciologist Tobias Sauter (Humboldt University of Berlin) provides insights into current research and highlights the specific consequences of shrinking ice for the global water supply. The program will also feature the “stupa,” an artificial ice cone developed by engineer Sonam Wangchuk in the Himalayas that stores meltwater and spring water in winter and releases it again in spring—a sustainable approach to local water collection that is now also being tested in the Alps.

Participants: Tobias Sauter und Jakob Schrenk

Tobias Sauter

Prof. Dr. Tobias Sauter has been head of the Climate Research Lab at the Geography Department of Humboldt University in Berlin since 2021 and researches the effects of climate change on glaciers, land-atmosphere interactions and extreme events. His work combines innovative methods with intensive field research, including expeditions to Patagonia, the Himalayas, Svalbard, Tibet, Antarctica, Norway and the Alps. With over 40 publications on high mountain regions, he is one of the leading researchers in the field of glacier and climate research in high mountain regions.

Jakob Schrenk

Jakob Schrenk lives in Munich and works as an editor for the Süddeutsche Zeitung magazine. He is also active as a coach and organisational consultant and has published several books (e.g. ‘Die Kunst der Selbstausbeutung’ (The Art of Self-Exploitation), ‘Kritik üben’ (Practising Criticism)). He is currently preparing for a trip to the Himalayas and is intensively engaged with topics such as glacier melt and the ice stupa.
