March 21 is World Day for Glaciers. To mark the occasion, Meet the Scientist is focusing on global glacier melt in the Alps, the Himalayas, and Patagonia. Glaciologist Tobias Sauter (Humboldt University of Berlin) provides insights into current research and highlights the specific consequences of shrinking ice for the global water supply. The program will also feature the “stupa,” an artificial ice cone developed by engineer Sonam Wangchuk in the Himalayas that stores meltwater and spring water in winter and releases it again in spring—a sustainable approach to local water collection that is now also being tested in the Alps.
Participants: Tobias Sauer und Jakob Schrenk
