Jakob Augstein is described by Der Freitag as ‘the leading left-wing voice in German journalism.’ As publisher and managing director of Der Freitag since 2008, he has become one of Germany’s most prominent public intellectuals. Born in 1967, Augstein studied German literature, theatre studies, and political science in Berlin and Paris. He subsequently worked as a journalist and commentator for publications including Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit. His analyses are widely sought after, whether on political talk shows or in ‘Augstein und Blome.’ What began as a television format has evolved into a weekly podcast and lively exchange of views between the ‘left-wing’ Jakob Augstein and the ‘liberal-conservative’ Nikolaus Blome (Political Editor-in-Chief of RTL and n-tv). Or, as the two themselves might put it: ‘visionary versus pragmatic.’
Jakob Augstein is also the author of several books. In 2017, he published ‘Das Leben wortwörtlich: Ein Vater-Sohn-Gespräch’ together with Martin Walser. In 2024, his novel ‘Die Farbe des Feuers’ was released.
