Joseph Martin Fischer, known to most simply as Joschka, was many things: a revolutionary, an icon of the Green Party, a top diplomat. In the 1970s, he was a member of the radical left-wing ‘Putzgruppe’ (cleaning group). He threw stones and fought with police officers. ‘Yes, I was militant,’ Fischer later admitted.
1985: Wearing bright white trainers, now museum pieces, Joschka Fischer appeared at the Wiesbaden state parliament to be sworn in as Hesse’s environment minister. It was a historic moment: the former street fighter became the first Green minister in the Federal Republic.
1999: Foreign Minister and Vice-Chancellor Joschka Fischer is hit in the head with a paint bag at the Green Party conference. It is a protest against German participation in the Kosovo War.
In 2005, Fischer retires from active politics. Today, he works mainly as a consultant and author. His most recent book is entitled ‘Die Kriege der Gegenwart und der Beginn einer neuen Weltordnung’ (The Wars of the Present and the Dawn of a New World Order).
