Being close to people and paying particular attention to where they are suffering most is what journalist and author Sophia Maier does. She first became known for her reports from refugee camps across Europe and later covered crisis and war zones for both print media and television. She reported from Syria while parts of the country were still under Assad’s control, meeting the children of Aleppo; from Afghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power; and she portrayed women living through the war in Ukraine. As an investigative journalist, Sophia Maier has also researched right-wing extremism and fraud involving alternative cancer treatments. In her book “Herz aus Stacheldraht”, the award-winning reporter reflects on the loss of humanity at Europe’s external borders and accuses the West of applying a “double standard.”
