Jembaa Groove is a Berlin-based Afro-Soul group founded in late 2020 by Yannick Nolting (bass, composer, producer) and Eric Owusu (vocals, percussion, songwriter). They met in a Berlin playground with their children and soon realized that they spoke the same musical language, without suspecting how fruitful this encounter would be for their musical future. By delving deep into both their backgrounds and musical identities, they developed a new yet authentic vibe that is ready to be spread around the world.
After searching for the right companions for their upcoming journey and meeting some of Berlin’s best musicians*, they eventually formed Jembaa Groove, a seven-piece band that combines jazzy sounds from Berlin’s emerging underground scene with traditional West African sounds from Ghana and Mali such as Highlife, Adowa and Wassoulou. Jembaa Groove’s music is influenced by the soulful rhythms and baritone chords of 70’s black America and contemporary artists like Lee Fields and Ikebe Shakedown as well as highlife artists like Ebo Taylor and Pat Thomas, with whom Eric has toured and recorded for many years.
