Max Reinhardt (1873-1943) was one of the most influential theatre directors and producers of the 20th century.
In 1933 he left Berlin for Salzburg. In 1938, National Socialism forced him to emigrate to the USA.
Eighty years later, the Stadtmuseum Berlin acquired a unique collection amassed by Leonhard M. Fiedler containing personal items belonging to Max Reinhardt. Some of the items, which also document Reinhardt’s work in exile, can now be seen in BERLIN GLOBAL.
Author Sybille Zehle has traced Max Reinhardt’s eventful life in her book “Max Reinhardt – ein Leben als Festspiel”, from which she will present excerpts. The “Exilmuseum Berlin” will be built on the site of the Anhalter Bahnhof, from which he fled the city. Curator Cornelia Vossen chronicles the local reflections on, and approaches to, the theme of exile.
