BERNI GOLDBLAT/Cine Guimbi: PHOENIX FROM ASHES

CINE GUIMBI once was one of the most popular cinemas in Burkina Faso. Dormant for more than two decades, it will soon re-open. This Cine Lecture presents Gine Guimbi a case study and pilot project. Also as a constructive reaction to the devasting effects of the IMF and the World Bank on the African cinema infrastructures in the 1990ies and early 2000ies.

Why did Cine Guimbi have to close down? And what did it take to re-open in 2022? Could it become a pilot project for the revitalization for cinema spaces on the continent? This cine lecture will present a case study, analyzing the devasting effects of the IMF and the World Bank on the African cinema infrastructures in the 1990ies and early 2000ies. And: how this local initiative collaborated with neighbors, market women, schools, local authorities and activated an international network of cinephiles as supporters.
