Poetry and literature play an important role in Persian culture.
Every child in Iran knows the stories of Amu Nowruz, also known as Baba Nowruz. This figure from Iranian folk culture appears every year at the beginning of spring together with his companion Hadji Firuz to announce the start of the new year.
On the eve of the equinox, when the beginning of the new year is celebrated in Iranian culture, Amu Nowruz brings gifts to children, similar to his counterparts in Christian culture, such as Father Christmas.
Amu Nowruz is described as an elderly man with grey or white hair and usually a full beard, wearing a felt hat, a long blue coat, a walking stick and a pair of linen trousers. He appears as a wise man who passes on the ancient history of the New Year to the young.
Experience the famous Iranian poet Mohammadreza Rostam Begloo reciting his poem Amu (Uncle) Nowruz and Destiny.
Afterwards, actor Ali Nazarian will perform the heroic saga Arash Kamangir the Archer.

Mohamadreza Hajrostambegloo
Mohammad Reza Haj-Rostambeglou (born 1974) is an Iranian poet, writer, researcher, and activist. As a defining voice in the literary innovations of Persian poetry over the last three decades, he is considered the co-founder of a modern “ghazal form.” Because of his protests against the Iranian government, he has been arrested and tortured several times. To avoid censorship, he published his texts through underground structures, including the group “Be Nam-e Vāzheh,” which he founded. After repeated persecution, he finally fled into exile. Since spring 2023, he has been living in Germany as a fellow of the PEN program “Writers in Exile.” His poetry collections have been published in Iran and in international anthologies, among other places, and individual poems have been translated into German.
