What is it like to flee to Germany as a young person? What do young refugees need to thrive? Why is family reunification such an important and controversial issue? How can I get involved? And how can I combat discrimination?

Mohammed Jouni is a political education consultant and diversity and empowerment trainer. As a teenager, he co-founded the self-organised group ‘Jugendliche ohne Grenzen’ (Youth Without Borders), which he still advises today. As a board member of BumF (Bundesfachverband unbegleitete minderjährige Flüchtlinge e.V., Federal Association for Unaccompanied Minor Refugees), among others, he campaigns for the rights of young refugees. For this, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 2021.
Mohammed Jouni was born in Lebanon and fled to Berlin without his family at the age of twelve. As a social worker at the BBZ (Counselling and Support Centre for Young Refugees and Migrants, Berlin), he has spent years advising people and families with refugee experience and is calling for an immediate end to the suspension of family reunification in cases of subsidiary protection: family reunification is a fundamental right and a human right.
Since 2023, he has been a lecturer at the Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences for Social Work, Health and Education. In his professional, activist and advisory activities, he is tirelessly committed to the issues of anti-racism, anti-discrimination, flight and migration.
