On two walls in the “Revolution” room, Egyptian artist Hanaa El Degham has painted “The renaissance of Osiris” (2020-21). The mural links depictions of ancient Egyptian mythology with scenes of protest on Cairo’s Tahrir Square (2011) and statements by activists. In conversation with visitors, the artist investigates the background to this interactive artwork.
Hanaa El Degham (born 1977 in Cairo) has lived in Berlin since 2008. She works with the media of painting, drawing and installations and holds regular art workshops. In her work, El Degham devotes herself to the relationship between personal and collective in situations of political upheaval.
Contemporary themes and sociocultural legacy overlap in her work. Through her own investigation and research, she seeks out observations, photography or conversations, in search of fragments of memory, image and text.
