Steffen Mau is a professor of macrosociology at Humboldt University in Berlin and director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Multireligious and Multiethnic Societies. He has published several bestsellers. Most recently, Steffen Mau co-authored the following book with Ricarda Lang: “The Great Upheaval: A Conversation About Crises, Conflicts, and Compromises.” In his research, the sociologist focuses intensively on the question: Do Germans live in a divided society? In 2021, Steffen Mau received the Leibniz Prize from the German Research Foundation. His books have been widely discussed and, above all, frequently cited: “Unequally United: Why the East Remains Different” and: “Trigger Points: Consensus and Conflict in Contemporary Society” (co-authored with Thomas Lux and Linus Westheuser). Steffen Mau coined terms such as “polarization entrepreneurs” and “change fatigue.”
