How do bodies move with water – and with one another? The performance workshop Gestures of Fishing invites participants to collectively experience gestures, rhythms and imaginaries inspired by artisanal fishing. Fishing is understood not only as a practice and a form of ancestral knowledge, but also as a way of living together and as a collective choreography with the waters.

The performance draws on encounters with four artisanal fishermen from Guanabara Bay whose movements and knowledge informed the video work Gestures of Fishing and the immersive installation Forest of Tides. Their gestures become the starting point for a shared physical exploration: participants create waves, follow the rhythms of the tides, move like a school of fish, and experience interdependence and connection with other bodies and with space. Bodies become hooks, connections turn into nets, and symbolic knots reveal the cooperation and collective intelligence inherent in fishing.

Marcela Cavallini is an artist, researcher, and professor with a PhD in Visual Arts from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. Her artistic practice moves across dance, performance, and different media, investigating the interrelations between the body, collectivity, and territory. She develops collaborative projects of social engagement that take collective embodied experience as a field for creating bonds and activating potentials to act, transform, and imagine other possible worlds. She is a member of the Territórios Sensíveis Platform, with aesthetic-political projects alongside caiçara communities in Guanabara Bay, and of Ponto de Cultura Carimbó dos Altos-RJ, with initiatives aimed at valuing and disseminating northern Brazilian culture in different cultural spaces.
