Text tricks, flowing words and rhythmic sentences: In this workshop, children aged 8 to 12 get an exciting introduction to the world of wordplay and spoken-word poetry. Language artists Lucia Lucia and Bas Böttcher show participants how to use a toolkit of sentence-building techniques to create funny, entertaining and engaging texts. They support the young slammers in turning their own ideas into entertaining pieces and presenting them on stage.
The workshop focuses on an element that surrounds us every day and yet is full of surprises: water. We drink it, swim in it, and encounter it as rain, ice or the sea. What might a poem about a wave that sweeps everything away sound like? How would a river speak as it searches for its way?
Inspired by the exhibition On Water. WasserWissen at Humboldt Labor in Berlin, the children explore the many facets of water and transform their observations and ideas into their own poetry slam texts.

Participants
Bas Böttcher is one of the co-founders of the German-language spoken word scene. He studied at the Bauhaus University in Weimar and has lived in Berlin since 2000. His texts are considered exemplary for contemporary stage poetry. They appear in school textbooks (Schroedel, Cornelsen, Klett) and important collections of German poetry (Der Neue Conrady, Lyrikstimmen, etc.).
He has also published the three volumes of poetry “Dies ist kein Konzert”, “Neonomade” and “Vorübergehende Schönheit” with Voland & Quist. Bas Böttcher has performed at venues including the Elbphilharmonie concert hall (Hamburg), and the Bibliothèque Nationale de France (Paris) as well as at book fairs in Beijing, Guadalajara, Moscow, São Paulo and Bangkok.
Bas Böttcher is the inventor and programmer of various media formats for poetry. He developed the electronic hypertext Looppool as a new form of expression on the Internet. He has taught at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig, the German Literature Archive in Marbach, the Kulturakademie Baden-Württemberg, the University of the Arts in Berlin and at Goethe Institutes worldwide.
Lucia Lucia gained widespread attention in November 2017 with her performance “Mathilda.” The recording from the finals of the German-Language Poetry Slam Championships went viral, racking up over four million views and generating significant media coverage nationwide. Since then, the Hamburg city champion has been performing on stages throughout Germany and Switzerland and is working on her first solo tour—with a clear focus on writing and performing. She has been part of the poetry slam scene since 2015. Her performances have taken her to venues including the Dockville Festival, the Deichbrand Festival, the Schauspiel Leipzig, the Hanover State Opera, and the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. In 2017, she reached the finals of the German-language championships; her final piece, “Mathilda,” recorded by NDR, was viewed millions of times. She can be seen regularly at the Nachtspeicher Hamburg with her solo show “Oh, aber ja.” In 2019, her poetry collection “Texte, die auf Liebe enden” was published by S. Fischer Verlag.
In addition, she is a co-founder and permanent member of the Berlin reading stage Neuköllner Brett, alongside Aron Boks, Wolf Hogekamp, and Jacinta Nandi.
