What is life like for a woman perceived as Filipino in the diaspora? Joy Alpuerto Ritter shares her lived experiences through questions like these with dancers Ann Francis Ang, Cristina Buenaflor and Suzette Sagisi. Together, in ‘Ah-Teh. Big Sister’, they embark on a choreographic search, exploring and drawing closer to their experiences as exoticized artists navigating between tradition and new beginnings, and raising their voices against the male gaze and external attributions of identity.
Filipino folk dance meets street and club dance culture, while traditional rhythms merge into contemporary compositions by musician and composer Vincenzo Lamagna. The rich heritage of Filipino patterns and textiles, imbued with diverse meanings, is reflected in the costumes by Pepe Dayaw and the spatial design. The world premiere explores questions surrounding the definition and transmission of cultural values, how to engage with one’s own colonial heritage, and how tradition can be integrated into one’s own lived reality.
