In literature and in theatre such as Nō or Kabuki, where all roles are portrayed by persons of the same gender, but also in Japanese visual culture and art, there are numerous examples of representations where the question of gender cannot be answered conclusively. Current readings of such non-binary images are attempted in order to question the matter of gender.
