Time to Air Out! Summer live concerts in the Schlüter Courtyard – free and open air

Live concerts and DJ sets, family program and cold drinks. You are cordially invited to the open-air music festival AIRING OUT – free of charge and open air.

The transcultural and cross-genre live program presents international guests and musicians from the Berlin scene. Let yourself be carried away by the musical parcours that leads from Accra to Bogotá, from Belgrade to Bangkok, from Harare to Vilnius and from Rio de Janeiro to Istanbul and back to the dancefloor sounds of Berlin’s nightlife. On twelve summer evenings AIRING OUT invites you to experience bands that span wide musical arcs and tell diverse stories – impressive, multi-perspective and extremely danceable.

Framed by the baroque facades of the Schlüterhof, the AIRING OUT festival invites music lovers of all ages, tourists and night owls to experience extraordinary music. Curated by Melissa Perales, the program aims to surprise with the unknown and the familiar, with sounds and stories that move across borders and continents.

Join us for twelve very special evenings under the Berlin night sky.

Residency-program

In addition, five Berlin based musicians and cultural practitioners will engage with the Humboldt Forum and ithe exhibited collections as part of a research residency. The artistic results will be presented on the last festival weekend (August 5, 2023) as a a joint, performative concert evening. This also closes a programmatic circle that has emerged from the curatorial process of the past two years, enabling an encounter between the artists and the Humboldt Forum. The focus is on a practice of mutual exchange, transparency, and the creation of a sustained dialogue between the institution and the artists. By listening to each other and highlighting the common but yet different stories, honoring truths, and creating space for personal connections to histories and ancestors.

Curatorial Statement:

Melissa Perales (a.o. Music Pool Berlin, Torstrassen Festival, Night School,++), Curator AIRING OUT:

“The curation of this edition continues to create a platform for the artists’ stories to be re-centered, it musically bridges the gap for the audience to go on a journey of discovery, leaves open the door for participation and encourages listening and dancing. I believe there is something for every music lover, from Fra-Fra Gospel to Drone to Turkish Psychedelic, Afro-Caribbean Transcendence and even Rap from Makobohka, the oldest township in Zimbabwe! I am thrilled that we are able to offer this wonderful program for free, making it accessible to all and a low threshold for audiences to come together and discover the beauty and diversity of cultures around them through music.”

“A big emphasis of the Festival will be on the relevance of “Community” in music, and about having to go “outside of our bubbles” sometimes to grow and heal through creativity. Communities are relevant for all artists, but especially for those with migrant backgrounds, it plays a larger role, as I myself experienced living in Berlin all these years. From Inside these communities we find support and a family but also most relevant is to be part of exchange and a celebration of each other. I am a Mexican-American curator living in Berlin for the past 27 years and it has been my honour, as well as I feel my duty to create spaces and stages like this where room is made for underrepresented, uprooted, and lost narratives to be told.”
